OMEGA History

The Early Days in Switzerland
OMEGA began in 1848 when Louis Brandt started assembling pocket watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Working out of a modest workshop, he sourced parts from local suppliers and focused on accuracy above all. In 1894, Brandt’s sons introduced the revolutionary 19-ligne “OMEGA” caliber, which used interchangeable components for easy servicing. The movement was so advanced and successful that the company adopted “OMEGA” as its official name. This marked the beginning of a legacy built on technical innovation and precision.

Timing the World’s Most Watched Events
OMEGA became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in 1932, bringing 30 stopwatches and a single technician to Los Angeles. It was the first time one company handled all Olympic timing, setting a new standard for international sports. Over time, OMEGA introduced photoelectric sensors, electronic start systems, and high-speed cameras that capture thousands of images per second. These innovations continue to shape how sports are judged and remembered, solidifying OMEGA’s role as the trusted timekeeper of global events.

From the Sea to the Silver Screen
The Seamaster made its debut in 1948, blending military-tested waterproofing with a refined civilian design. It quickly gained a reputation among divers, sailors, and adventurers who needed reliability beneath the surface. The line achieved new fame when Jacques Cousteau’s crew used Seamaster models during underwater explorations. Later, it became a pop culture icon when James Bond began wearing it in the 1995 film GoldenEye. Though the spotlight brought style, the Seamaster remains a robust dive watch built for real-world challenges.

The First Watch Worn on the Moon
In the early 1960s, NASA began testing watches for use in space. Each model faced heat, shock, vibration, vacuum exposure, and other brutal conditions. Only the OMEGA Speedmaster survived the entire process. It became NASA’s official choice in 1965 and accompanied every manned mission of the Gemini and Apollo programs. During Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin wore his Speedmaster while walking on the Moon. When disaster struck on Apollo 13, astronauts used it to time a critical engine burn that helped bring the crew safely home. The Speedmaster remains the only watch flight-qualified by NASA for spacewalks.

Pushing Technology Forward
OMEGA’s drive for innovation hasn’t slowed. In 1999, the brand introduced the Co-Axial escapement, which reduced internal friction and improved long-term precision. This technology laid the groundwork for the Master Chronometer standard, a certification process developed with METAS that tests not just accuracy, but resistance to magnetic fields and environmental conditions. Today, OMEGA produces timepieces that perform in extreme settings, whether underwater, in space, or in everyday life. From the Seamaster and Speedmaster to the Constellation and De Ville lines, each model reflects a dedication to quality that continues to evolve with the times.
